Inkjet Photo Paper – Inkjet Media

Inject photo paper is made from special fine paper designed for inkjet printers and canvas art. It is typically classified as per its weight, brightness, smoothness and sometimes by its opacity.

Inkjet media is required for quality printing work and the inkjet paper is fabricated from superior quality deinked pulps or chemical pulps. It calls for excellent dimensional stability and there should be a good surface strength and surface smoothness along with no curing or cockling. Even and adequate porosity is needed to counteract spreading of ink or colour on the paper. Higher grades of inkjet paper require coating for a smooth and good quality finish.

Before purchasing inkjet media or inkjet photo paper, you must check the opacity, brightness, weight and gloss finish to ensure that you have a quality material for your painting or print outs.

Opacity: This requires checking how see through is the paper. The higher the opacity, the less will the image bleed through to the other side. Inkjet media has relatively high opacity as against laser papers so bleed-through is less of a problem with the inkjet photo papers.

Brightness: The brightness of the white colour needs to be checked. For any paper, there can be different levels of whiteness or brightness. Brightness is expressed in units from 1 to 100. Photo papers usually have brightness in 90s. Not all papers are labelled with their brightness rating and so it is advisable to determine brightness by comparing two or more papers side-by-side.

Weight: The weight of paper is usually expressed in pounds or as grams per square meter. Different types of papers have their own weight scale. The ideal weight for inkjet photo papers ranges between 24 to 71 lb or 90 to 270 g/m2.

Gloss Finish: The coating on inkjet media or photo papers gives the look and feel of photographic prints. As the coating keeps the paper from readily absorbing the ink, some glossy papers dry slowly. However, quick-dry gloss finishes are also available these days.
