The choice of right banner paper matters a lot when it comes to preparing impressive banners. If the banner has to display a printed photograph, you need to ensure the superior quality and the right size of the paper so that the picture fits in properly and looks good on the frame.

The photographic banner paper comes in a wide range of sizes from 3 and ½ by 5 inches to 16 by 20 inches and even larger. You can also find different finishes such as matte, semi-matte, pearl, lustre and glossy. The banner paper with matte finish has very low reflectivity while the ones with a glossy finish are highly reflective and give an impression of greater detail and richer contrast.

In terms of thickness of photographic banner paper, you can find single and double weight paper. The double weight papers are typically easier to handle, process and mount.

For a banner paper, you also get a choice between fibre based and resin coated paper. The fibre based banner paper can be used for prints in black and white but not for coloured prints. The photographic banners on resin-coated paper take a much lesser time to develop but fibre-based paper is known to produce richer dark shadow tones. Along with this, the final print is much easier to touch-up and it produces better results when bleached and toned.

You also need to select a grade of banner paper. Variable-contrast papers that are used with graded filters offer the best flexibility. However, the papers are available in single grades from 0, or soft contrast, to 5, or hard contrast. Coloured papers usually have a more limited range and are mostly general purpose in low-contrast grades. However, some organisations do produce high contract grades for coloured banner papers as well.
