SAP has announced new technologies based on Netweaver. e.g SAP has developed BO (Business Objects) which will probably be the new Business Intelligence (BI) framework, so all the few yrs of experience the current specialists are claiming as gold will become obsolete.
One of the most obvious basic fact is that certification backs knowledge. Imagine walking into a corporation and telling them "Please employ me, I want to break into SAP, I haven't any certification or knowledge whatsoever but Now i'm willing to gain knowledge on the job". Are you kidding me? No company will want to exercise you on their account, they could do it but you should have to sell your soul to them for the next two year period.
Another thing I want to make is, don't listen to people informing you that certification is useless. If you make a closer look, this advice comes from current gurus on the additional side of the fence trying to guard their market. They see us as another newcomer consultant to contend with for their job.
Certainly, I am not saying here, "Get certified and the massive rate paying job provides will probably be moving in", but it definitely will get our feet in the door. Just imagine a sailor that has been told, "Do not set sail because there is a lot turbulence on the seas, there is the hazard of capsizing, stay on that side of the sea and you'll be risk-free". Yes he will be risk-free but he will not achieve, I prefer to set sail in the storm and feel extremely pleased of myself when I end up on the other side.
