hurleypalmerflatt's Stuart Bowman comments on CRC League tables
Stuart Bowman is the director of energy and sustainability at
mechanical and electrical engineering consultancy hurleypalmerflatt (http://www.hurleypalmerflatt.com/). Commenting on the recently published CRC league tables, which provide a financial and reputational incentive for participants to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions, Mr. Bowman stated:
"The tables today are very much like the first match of the football season. It's hard to tell who will be at the top in the long run but these initial results give us a flavour.
"Those companies that have performed well have clearly invested early in the scheme and are high up in the league as a result. For the others success in future will depend on improving the energy performance of their operations.
Mr Bowman, of
consulting engineers hurleypalmerflatt, continued: "But how much will it cost in the long run for the companies which haven't invested - not just financially but in terms of perception? Some companies may have deliberately chosen to invest only from the second year of the scheme and so will leap up the table next year. However, the damage to their reputations from a poor result now may already have been done.
"It is interesting to note that of the first 20 organisations, five are from the health sector, proof of how material energy and carbon is in this sector. It is encouraging to see this sector commit to long term investment on data collection and management process, this bodes well for the future indeed and a good act to follow for others.
"It is also interesting to see that the 50 biggest emitters listed in the CRC league table are responsible for about a third of all the emissions reported by the 2,100 organisations in the scheme. Many of the largest emitters are supermarkets with large retail portfolios, bigger public sector organisations and councils, and infrastructure or industrial electricity users. This is because these organisations have very large portfolios (such as in retail) and/or operations which are electricity intensive (such as operators of IT based infrastructure, or water companies).*"
*The largest industrial emitters who burn significant quantities of fossil fuels are not on this list as they are covered instead by either the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) or by Climate Change Agreements (CCAs).
