New Year, New Writing Style: Transform your Essay Writing this January

It’s a new year and a new academic term, so what better way to kick-start January than by overhauling your essay writing style? With a few simple tricks and techniques, you can tweak the structure, quality and content of your essays to present your academic ideas in the strongest possible light. Start by looking through your previous essays and trying to identify weaknesses and areas for improvement. Does your writing always demonstrate a clear flow of thoughts, with information organised logically? Are your sentences often long and complex, or are they short and over-simplistic? Is it easy to follow the arguments you present and to understand the conclusions you draw?

Once you have identified areas of weakness, it is a simple task to concentrate on solving them. If your essays are not logically ordered, you can improve them by creating an essay plan before you start to write. Use a spider diagram or brainstorm to scribble down all the possible facts you might want to include in your essay, then organise them into a coherent order. The most important points should come first, followed by those that are logically connected to them. Any unusual or different ideas should be kept for a penultimate paragraph towards the end, just before your conclusion.

From weekly essays to law dissertations, one of the most important ways to improve your writing style is structure. Start every assignment with a clear introduction that sets out exactly what your main points will be and then divide the rest of your writing into paragraphs, with one important idea per paragraph. Use a topic sentence to make it clear from the start what subject each paragraph will deal with. A great conclusion should sum up your thoughts and draw concisely articulated final assumptions.

Sentence style is another aspect of your writing that you may want to consider improving. Sentences which are too short and simple can make your writing repetitive and make it difficult to communicate complex ideas. On the other hand, if you use lots of very long, compound sentences with many different clauses, your essay may become confusing to read. Try to aim for a mixture of sentence types, with longer sentences interspersed with shorter ones. It is always a good idea to reserve the shortest sentences for very important points, particularly at the ends of paragraphs, as this gives them impact and makes them stand out.

Another great way to improve your essay style is to read as many examples of other students’ writing as you possibly can. This can give you great ideas and inspiration and, by contrast, can also help you to realise things you might never have noticed about your own writing style. Ask your friends to swap essays with you, or use a company like Oxbridge Essays, which provides excellent sample essays written by students of the UK’s top universities. You’ll be on your way to a brand new essay style before the month is over!
